His artistic parents gave Melan a paintbrush and paints, which yielded many successful experiments. He was particularly attracted to the Impressionists and their use of color, space and texture. He spent many years perfecting his personal technique, but never forgot the influence of the Impressionists, which he loved as a boy. In 1985 he completed his high school studies at a school for the arts and was subsequently admitted to Krivoi Rog University in the south of the Ukraine. During these years he exhibited extensively and built a solid name for himself as a respected artist. In 1989 he was accepted into the Ukrainian Artists Guild. As soon as the "Iron Curtain" was opened in the USSR, Melan and his family made the decision to immigrate to Israel.
